Madeira is situated in the Atlantic Ozean, not far away from the Canaras and that’s why near by Africa. The islands extend about 800km² and so they are a little bit smaller than Berlin. 200.000 inhabitants are round about so much like cities such as Erfurt, Rostock or Mainz. The climate is mild the whole year, at the beginning of February we had 20°C every midday, at night it was colder and not so comfortable without heating.
The name Madeira by itself means „wood“ and the island was the last stop for Portuguese galleys before the Atlantic passage for centuries. That’s why they often repared theyr ships there and loged most of the trees. So today a lot of places are without any tree. This phenomenon you can see in nearly all subtropical Europian countries too.
Not far away from Santa Cruz, where we stayed in a hotel, is the North East point of Madeira, so we enjoyed to go there.
At the beginning of the path there was a text that you will need 2/ 1/2 hours for four kilometres. First unbelievable, but after the first kilometre it was clear, why …
Suddenly the weather changed completly. at the half of the way or so we had to go back. It became stormy, rainy and the path was wet and slippy.
In Santa Cruz it rained too, but it wasn’t as windy as before.
Noch ein letzter Blick die Nordküste entlang Richtung Westen…
A last view along the Northcoast in direction West …
Last but not least:
Madeira is an old volcanic island. Last volcano activities were about 6500 years ago. If you consider carefully the cliffs and mountains, you can recognize the basalt columns of the lava flows and the tuff layers of the ashes.
This loves my Geografic soul … 😀
Noch eine schöne Strelitzie für euch :
